About Me - Present Day

I returned to teaching full-time in 2010 to help supplement our families income.  I taught kindergarten and 5th grade.  I am currently a Reading Interventionist for grades K-5 and Dance Instructor for middle school.

My eldest will be attending high school next year and my youngest will begin 6th grade.  However, even with teachers who try their best, my youngest is struggling in his charter school. His IEP is just paper work that we return to annually.  He cannot complete assignments in the rigid environment set and when he does complete assignments they do not count because the handwriting is not neat enough, he did not line up the paragraphs along the margin, or he simply tuned out after sitting in the classroom so long.

He is no longer allowed to take books to read at school because he is distracted when the teacher is teaching her whole group lesson.  He has difficulty focusing with the noise of 28 children (18 of which are boys).  He is often sent to the directors office so she can make him complete his work.

As a Reading Interventionist I've had the opportunity to work with children who struggle in reading and don't fit the mold of a traditional classroom.  As a mom of a son on an IEP I've been blessed to understand that failure to learn in the standardized environment does not mean that my child is not smart.  He is bright and will continue to excel as we create a learning environment in which he can succeed.

I will home school my son next year and am thrilled to provide a successful, warm, learning environment in which your child can also thrive.  I invite you to become part of our home schooling family.

About Me - Early School Years.

I graduated in teaching in 1999.  I was taught to value education from a young age.  I wanted to pass along this passion for learning to my own children.  By my eldest son's 8th birthday and 3rd grade year of school I knew that public schools were not meeting his needs.  He had been bullied daily and was terrified to go to school.  Boys would wait for him in the bathroom to turn off the lights and lock him in.  The school said they were doing all they could.  They'd continue to document these incidents, meet with the bullies parents, and have my son sit out of regular activities to keep him safe.  With all of their interventions, my son was not safe.

So now my son was removed from activities that he should've rightfully participated in and learned from and I had to wait, hoping that the bullying would stop.  One day my son fought back and hit the bully.  My son was to miss recess the rest of the week as a consequence for hitting.  I knew at this point that the school's were powerless to help children like mine.

My youngest son was in kindergarten this same year.  He had been seeing a speech therapist since he was 3yrs old.  He struggled with collaboration because he was 5 and could not be understood by those around him because of his speech impediment.  He was to be expelled from school because he would cry daily in the classroom, making teaching difficult for the teacher.  I understood the challenges of the teacher.  However, I fought this expulsion with the school.  As the educators, they were responsible for taking the time to know and meet each child's needs.  This was not happening.  As we celebrated our annual family tradition of making New Year goal's I cried when my son said, "I want to be on green for just 1 day." (Green was part of the school behavior system, referring to a stop light.  Green = good.  Red = Bad)

The following year I pulled my children out of public school and put my degree into action.  I home-schooled my children for 2 years.  In those 2 years my boys learned to love learning and began to repair their self-confidence.

What Would You Give for Your Child's Success?

I know from personal experience that our child's well-being is one of the strongest motivators in our lives.  What would you give to have your child wake up excited to go to school or come home saying "I did it!"

Private school tuition begins at $10,000 per year.  We all wish we could give our child(ren) the increased quality of a private school education. Yet, this is not always feasible in today's world.

However, does $7 per hour sound possible for small group instruction and specialized teaching that caters to your child's needs.  This comes out to just $49 a day.

With home school, your child will have a class size of 5 students or less, every day.  He will enjoy activities that connect learning to real life. School will go from 8:00-3:00 each day. How am I able to teach your child in just 7 hours a day?  It's because time is spent on learning rather than the classroom management of 28 children.

Listed is a sample of your child's school day.  I believe that we learn more when we make connections with what we are learning.  Subjects are taught simultaneously to connect concepts just like we attach fabric squares to make a quilt.  **Your child will need to bring his own snack and lunch each day. **

Why Homeschool?

Scenario:  The phone rings.  You worriedly answer it thinking, "Please don't let it be the school again".

"Hello, is Johnny's mom available?"

"This is is her speaking."

"Hi, this is Mr. Barker with your child's school calling.  We've had another incident with Johnny.  When can you come in and meet with us?"

***Does this sound familiar?***

I've come to realize that public and charter schools are unable to meet the needs of all of their students, especially those with unique ways of learning.  Private schools can be costly and still not meet the needs of your child.  In these crucial years where your child is developing his sense of self  and understanding of the world around him, why not give him a view that includes self-worth.

Home school is an opportunity for your child to realize that learning is not only valuable but enjoyable as well.  There are multiple ways to solve a problem and he is capable of finding solutions that work for him.

He no longer has to worry, "No matter what I do, it's never good enough".  With home school, he will know "I'm good enough just being me."
